Missed the picks last week as I spent the weekend at Edinboro University Homecoming. I only did two years of graduate school at Edinboro, but have been to six Boro homecomings compared to zero at Syracuse.
Its just a different environment compared to other homecoming celebrations. Edinboro is old school and new school. Saturday morning features a parade with floats made by the Greeks (not the ones from Athens, the ones that get paddled, circle fat parts in marker, and date rape) and a lot of drinking. There's a football game, but out of the nearly 7,000 students that attend Edinboro, about 300 of them care. And there isn't anything wrong with that, it's just Edinboro. And maybe that's why I love it so much.
True story - We were at a local bar at the start of the football game and all three televisions were showing the Edinboro game. On Edinboro's first possession they marched down the field and scored a touchdown. Out of the 75 people in the bar, I was the only one who noticed and clapped. We went to a second bar and the Penn State football game was on every television. But that's Edinboro and its more fun than you could possibly imagine.
So, here are The Dip's Week 6 picks (Home Team in CAPS and spreads based on Sportsbook.com lines). Edinboro did win its homecoming game 70-19. But not that it matters.
For the Season: 8-11-1 Locks of the Week - 2-2
Houston (+6.5) at JACKSONVILLE - Houston swept the Jags last season when the Texans were worse and Jacksonville was better. Garrard is due for a three-four INT game and the Texans will focus on stopping the run game. Take out MJD's 52-yard run last week and the Jags aren't exactly moving it up and down the field. This is way too many points in this series. Think 17-13 Jacksonville.
St. Louis (+9.5) at BALTIMORE - St. Louis might not score more than 3 points, but what has Baltimore shown to suggest they would score 13? The whopping 9 they put up on San Fran last week was pathetic. The Ravens' defense might be getting points here based on last year's performance. If Gus gets more than a second to throw the ball, Torry Holt can get open on these corners. If this were the Ed Jones Dome, St. Louis could pull the upset, but in Baltimore it could be tough. Think 15-10 Ravens.
New England (-5.5) at DALLAS - The Cowboys looked awful on Monday night and not just Romo's picks. They couldn't get any run game going and the receivers dropped too many balls. Belichick watched that game and realized that Romo couldn't read the zone coverage. That doesn't bode well for the Boys against a defense that is best in the league at disguising coverages and blitzes. Dallas will get its points, but its secondary can't contain Moss, Stallworth, Welker, Watson, and Faulk. No chance. Unless Roy Williams can horsecollar every receiver for the Pats, Brady will get another 3-4 TD game. Think 34-27 New England.
New York Giants (-3.5) at ATLANTA - I had to watch the massacre that was the Giants defensive line against the Eagles offensive line two weeks with McNabb as the starting QB of my fantasy team. Needless to say, I lost that week. What are those guys going to do against the rookie tackles of the Falcons? This could be ugly. If Petrino loses his mind and goes to the statue Leftwich at any point, they should charge him with accessory to murder cause that dude will get killed. My cell phone moves in the pocket better than that guy. With the turnovers and sacks, think 28-10 Giants.
LOCK OF THE WEEK
SEATTLE (-6.5) over New Orleans - Thought about New England or New York here but hate the road favorite as the LOTW. Plus, New Orleans is a train wreck and now the Saints have to travel across the country to play in Qwest field, one of the harder road venues to play. Plus, Seattle is home after getting shut out by Pittsburgh, pouring salt in the wound from the Super Bowl two years ago. This is going to be one pissed off Seahawks team. Think 27-17 Seattle.
BONUS LOCK
ARIZONA (-4) over Carolina - Vinnie Testaverde? C'mon. He's the best they could get? David Carr's back stiffened up on the team flight to Arizona. They probably made his sorry ass ride in coach, or a flight attendant might have sacked him in the terminal while the Panthers were waiting to board. Glad I kept Steve Smith in my keeper league over Owens and Wayne. Ugh. Think 31-6 Arizona.

KANSAS CITY (+3) over Cincinnati - The Chiefs suck, but can the Bengals actually stop anybody?
CLEVELAND (-4) over Miami - Cleo Lemon, really?
Minnesota (+5) at CHICAGO - Back to Earth for Brian Griese. Cedric Benson might finish with -17 yards in this game.
Philadelphia (-3.5) at NEW YORK JETS - Can McNabb and company be this bad or do they play like they did against Detroit with Westbrook and L.J. Smith back? Here's picking the latter.
Tennessee (+3) at TAMPA BAY - Think VY has a crappy game, but can the Bucs score more than 14? That's a no.
Washington (+3) at GREEN BAY - Please, God. Seriously, please.

Redskins - Packers Preview
Week 6 – Washington at Green Bay
(September 4, 2007) Lambeau Field used to mean an automatic loss to any team unfortunate enough to have to travel there. Over the last couple seasons, however, Green Bay has been a friendly site for the opposition as the Packers have a losing record at home going 3-5 in 2005 and 2006. The Redskins will be making their first true road trip of the season with the Monday night game at nearby Philly the only other game away from Fedex. The Skins defense will handle WR Donald Driver and force Favre to go to young WRs Greg Jennings and James Jones. After a few shots from Taylor and Landry, these two will be alligator arming every ball across the middle. The Packers defense is much improved but the Skins should be able to run and before hitting Moss deep on play action. Moss’ speed should be too much to handle for aging cornerback Charles Woodson.
Prediction – Washington 27 – Green Bay 13 (Record 4-1)
Don't think I can stand by my preseason prediction after the way Green Bay's defense has been playing this season. However, they melted in down in the second half of the Bears game and showed a susceptibility to plays made by the TE and RB. Chicago TEs Greg Olsen and Desmond Clark combined for 7 catches, 119 yards, and 2 TDs. Chicago RBs added 3 catches for 37 yards. This is good news for a Redskins' team that has had trouble going vertical and will feature Cooley, Sellers, Portis/Betts, and underneath routes by Thrash and McCardell. Poor Santana Moss will be coming back to the huddle following many decoy go routes.
The Packers and Redskins enter this week with one loss each, both coming in games in which each team held a ten-point halftime lead at home but went on to lose the game. There were a couple of similarities between the two games:
1. Each team followed the gameplan of playing to keep the lead rather than extend it. Both teams ran the ball ineffectively in the second half. Run first down, run second down, incomplete pass on third down.
2. The Packers had 32 total yards of offense before their final drive of the game where they totaled 41 yards in driving for the tying touchdown. The Redskins had 31 total yards of offense before their final drive of the game where they totaled 32 yards.
3. Each team had a costly second-half turnover that directly led to an opponents' touchdown on the following drive.
4. Both teams played aggressive defense in the first half as Chicago and New York had just over 120 yards of offense and 10 total points. In the second half, both teams employed the prevent defense and got picked apart for 7 scores or 41 points.
The Redskins learned from their mistake and kept the pressure on Detroit in the next game. After allowing only 56 yards and four punts in the first half, the Skins picked off two passes and only surrendered a field goal in the second half. I have a feeling that Packers' coach Mike McCarthy will make the same adjustments and this game will be hard-hitting from the first quarter through the fourth.
The keys to this game will be on the offensive and defensive lines and in the secondary of the Skins. Washington will need to get pressure on Favre and not let him improvise and allow the receivers time to work open. Injuries to Green Bay's offensive line should help the Skins defense get to Favre without blitzing allowing extra defenders to drop back into coverage.
Green Bay likes short passes and allowing their receivers to run after the catch. The Redskins secondary will have to tackle on the first opportunity or the next opportunity will be in the endzone. If the Packers pick up the Skins' blitzes, then Favre will have time to hit Driver and Jennings on quick slants which often lead to long touchdowns.
The Skins line will need to keep Packer DEs Aaron Kampman and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila off Campbell or he'll be attempting his throws from his back.
While I think the Skins have a great chance to win this game, I don't think they are at the point yet where they can go on the road and beat a good team. In the second half of this season, they could be. I do think they'll hold the lead for parts of this game, but will probably lose it in the fourth quarter.

Dipping Into The NFL - Week 4
Abbreviated picks this week as I spent the last two days watching our friend Scott complete his first Iron Man Triathalon in 12 hours, 13 minutes and change. Amazing feat. Congrats.

Chicago at DETROIT (+3) - Too many secondary issues for the Bears. I don't think Griese is the answer.
Green Bay (-2) at MINNESOTA - Favre is playing well and the defense is playing better.
Pittsburgh (-6) at ARIZONA - The Steelers are an emotional team. They'll be playing to prove that Mike Tomlin was the right choice as head coach.
SAN DIEGO (-12) vs. Kansas City - This is the week. It has to be.
LOCK OF THE WEEK
INDIANAPOLIS (-9.5) over Denver - The Broncos should have lost to the Bills and Raiders. They got blown out by the Jags. This won't be close. Think 21 plus. Sorry, PPD.

Stunning a Cougar
This is a crazy video.
Heidi Gill, a single mother of two, was out with friends at Up a Creek Tavern in Warren, OH on September 2, 2007 after attending a wedding.
Gill, 38-years old, was asked to leave the bar by bouncers. Apparently unable to tame the wild cougar, the bouncers asked police to help. Officer Richard Kovatch (sp?) responded and after finding the wild cougar uncooperative, decided that force was necessary to subdue the wild animal.
The officer tasered the poor woman seven times, including while she was handcuffed and WHILE SHE WAS IN THE BACK OF HIS CRUISER. That is nuts.
In the video, check out the part where she walks towards the back of the car. She takes a brutal shot off the rear fender.
Also, after the cop tells her to get out of the car and walk to the cruiser behind his, HE TASERS HER AGAIN! This time she falls to the ground and is knocked unconscious.

Dipping Into The NFL - Week 3
Spent Week 2 watching games in the luxury of my living room. A far cry from the Sportsbook at the IP where I spent Week 1.
Overall an awful week as I didn't listen to my own advice and broke all my rules by picking Cincinnati as a seven-point favorite on the road in Cleveland. Granted, nobody picked Cleveland slamming 51 up Cincy's can, but I should have seen it coming. Hopefully, we learn from our mistakes and have a better Week 3.

San Diego (-5.5) over GREEN BAY - Whoa, whoa, whoa. San Diego was a Super Bowl favorite heading into the season. They beat the Bears, then got smacked by the Patriots. The offense has looked bad, the defense got torched, and everybody jumped off the bandwagon. Now, the Chargers are favorites, but everybody is picking the Packers to win this game. Why? The Packers beat an Eagles team that fumbled the game to them and they didn't even score an offensive touchdown. Then they beat up on a crappy Giants team. Green Bay's defense is playing well, but they haven't faced a back like LDT yet. Every week there is some line that Vegas begs you to pick knowing full well that its a sucker's bet. This is that line. Green Bay will get zero from its running game and Brett Favre and Donald Driver are good, but not Brady and Moss good. Plus, Green Bay has a losing record at home over the last two seasons so Lambeau Field isn't worth the 3 points that home field usually gets you. Green Bay will get about 40 yards rushing, Favre will throw three INTs and possibly fumble following a Merriman sack. LDT will score twice and Rivers will find Gates on quick passes and Tomlinson on swing passes out of the backfield. San Diego will roll the Packers at home 27-17.
Buffalo (+16.5) over NEW ENGLAND - Decided on a new rule. If a team scores seven points or less in a game, take them the next week plus the points. NFL players have pride and Buffalo will not want to go into New England and get blown out like they did in Pittsburgh. Atlanta played Jacksonville close and covered, Cleveland won outright, Kansas City stayed within 12 of Chicago, and Tampa Bay won outright over New Orleans. All four teams scored a touchdown or less in week one. I think that the Patriots will be on a little letdown following Sunday night's huge dismantling of the Chargers and may be looking ahead to Week 4's Monday night matchup with the Bengals. New England will win, but Buffalo keeps it respectable with a 31-17 loss.
WASHINGTON (-3.5) over New York Giants - Ugh. This is a definite loss, but I can't see the Skins only winning by a field goal in this game. Scores of 17-13 or 24-20 are much more likely. I would even take 14-10. Hopefully not since I'll be starting Portis and Cooley on my fantasy team this weekend. This game is sure to bring lots of screams from my couch on Sunday. Washington 24-17.
Carolina (-4) over ATLANTA - Oh, boy. After everything I said about Buffalo above and Cleveland last week I pick Carolina. Here's the problem by picking against the Falcons: 1) Home underdog. 2) Scored seven or less week before. 3) Division rival. 4) Starting QB called out by coach. What makes me go against everything is Carolina's loss to Houston last week. They should be fired up. I think that if they beat the Texans last week, they could be upset in this game. But Steve Smith won't let the Panthers lose. He'll be running the sidelines screaming at teammates all game. He lights DeAngelo Hall up for a score and the Panthers running game gets going again. Falcons' coach Bobby Petrino said QB Joey Harrington needs is hesitating too much and just needs to let it fly. Does he know that Harrington has more INTs than TDs in his career? Harrington lets it fly but the Panthers make most of the catches. Carolina gets a return for a score and wins 27-14.
LOCK OF THE WEEK -
OAKLAND (-3) over Cleveland - The Raiders could be 2-0 with close losses to Detroit and Denver. Warren Sapp and company will not lose the chance to get a victory with Cleveland in town. It was easy for Cleveland to get for division/state rival Cincy, but its a long trip to Oakland for the Browns. QB Derek Anderson comes back to reality with a couple of picks. The Raiders defense is much better than the Bengals defense. Lamont Jordan continues to have a good season and Oakland gets just enough from Josh McCown for a 17-13 victory.
Other Games - Just my opinion but won't count towards my season totals.
Indianapolis (-6) over HOUSTON - No Andre Johnson means throw the rules out the window.
Minnesota (+2.5) over KANSAS CITY - Kelly Holcomb is much better than Tavaris Jackson.
PHILADELPHIA (-6) over Detroit - Just a hunch. Think they're due. Seems like a strange line and oddsmakers know way more than we do.
NEW YORK JETS (-3) over Miami - No Zach Thomas. This is what they traded for Thomas Jones for.
PITTSBURGH (-9.5) over San Francisco - Could have been lock of the week. They'll shut down Gore and Alex Smith might actually cry on the field.
Cardinals (+7.5) over BALTIMORE - Defense is good, but offense is stagnant. Cards do just enough to cover.
Rams (+3.5) over TAMPA BAY - Another hunch. Just feel like Steven Jackson is due for a 150-yard, 2 TD game.
Jacksonville (+3) over DENVER - Denver wins every game with a late field goal. You'll either push or win.
SEATTLE (-3) over Cincinnati - Long trip for the Bengals and they didn't even pack their defense. Plus, bet the under of 49.5 points. When everybody thinks its going to be a shootout, it usually isn't.
Dallas (+3) over CHICAGO - Dallas offense is much better than Kansas City's. I'll bet against Grossman anytime.
NEW ORLEANS (-4) over Tennessee - I bet against the Saints in the Superdome opener against the Falcons last year. Not making that mistake again.

The Giants defense won’t be able to stop Portis and Betts and Cambell will have his best game of the first three.

I think I'm going to stick with my original prediction for this game. The Giants are playing worse than I expected and the defense has been non-existent. But previous performances can be thrown out the window when it comes to rivalry games such as this.
Based on the first two games, the Skins should be able to put 30-plus points up at FedEx Field, but the Giants are going to bring everything they can to this game. The defense has been called out for the entire week and they are going to rally and play their best game of season to date. That shouldn't be hard after their first two performances.
The Skins will start out slowly and emphasize the running game hard in the first half. It won't be effective at first, but the point will be to open up the play-action passing game and wear down the defense for the second half.
The game will be close at the half, but the Skins will open it up in the third quarter with a bomb to Santana Moss and the defense will force a turnover in Giants' territory that will lead to a Portis touchdown run.

Finally, the people at PETA have figured out a way to make me care about vegetarianism.
Our favorite "Clueless" actress from the 90's, Alicia Silverstone, has agreed to appear naked in a telelvision ad for PETA to help promote vegetarianism.
The 30-second spot is scheduled to run about 24 times in Houston today. PETA chose Houston as the city to debut the ad due to its unusually unhealthy eating habits. Men's Fitness magazine listed Houston among its top-ten fattest cities.
The commercials will feature the 30-year old Silverstone walking out of a pool, covering her naked body with her arms. Unfortunately, she ruins the shot by blabbering about the healthy benefits of not eating meat. Insert "eat meat" joke here.
A couple of side notes here:
1. Isn't it amazing how far off Silverstone has fallen in the past 13 years? As a gorgeous 17-year-old, Silverstone jumped into the spotlight, literally, in the Aerosmith videos "Cryin'", "Amazing" and "Crazy". Then had a stellar performance as psycho Adrienne in "The Crush" with Cary Elwes. She was only 17 in that movie! Cary Elwes has a a very lucky career (NSFW).
She officially blew up in 1995 as Cher in "Clueless" at the age of 19. She really shit the bed in her 20s with crappy movie after crappy movie.

As a gorgeous 17-year-old, Silverstone jumped into the spotlight, literally, in the Aerosmith videos "Cryin'", "Amazing" and "Crazy". Then had a stellar performance as psycho Adrienne in "The Crush" with Cary Elwes. She was only 17 in that movie! Cary Elwes has a a very lucky career (NSFW).
She officially blew up in 1995 as Cher in "Clueless" at the age of 19. She really shit the bed in her 20s with crappy movie after crappy movie.
2. In the "Cryin'" video, the guy who steals her purse in the diner is Josh Holloway, the actor who plays "Lost" favorite Sawyer.

Hail To The Redskins!
Sometimes you have to love it when you're proven wrong.
I predicted a 31-17 victory by the Eagles over the Redskins in last night's Monday Night Football matchup. Fortunately for Skins' nation, I proven with my two Sundays of NFL picks that I'm an idiot and know nothing about football.
The Redskins defense bent, bent, bent, and bent again but finally stiffened when it mattered the most and held on for a 20-12 victory at the Linc. They allowed Westbrook to run in space and left receivers open, but McNabb was wild in the first half and missed high on a lot of his throws. The Eagles moved the ball but Greg Williams' defense held the Eagles to four David Akers field goals and didn't let any Philly player sniff the endzone.
After a very boring first 29:46 of the game, the Redskins drove the field and found themselves with a first and goal from the one-yard line. Campbell spiked the ball to stop the clock. Then in a bizarre chain of events on 2nd and goal:
First try on 2nd and goal from one-yard line: Penalty - Delay of Game after Gibbs and Saunders were too late in getting Campbell the play and the goalline package into the game.
Second try on 2nd and goal from six-yard line: Penalty - False start on new right tackle Jason Fabini (starting RG Randy Thomas tore his tricep and was forced to leave the game)
Third try on 2nd and goal from 11-yard line: Penalty - False start on Fabini
Fourth try on 2nd and goal from 16-yard line: Gibbs sends out K Sean Suisham and the field goal unit. First of all, it's only second down. Second of all, there are 14 seconds left.
What the hell was that?
Lucky for Gibbs, Andy Reid calls a timeout to freeze the kicker giving the Washington assistant coaches a chance to remind him that he's supposed to win football games and not tie them. He sends the offense back onto the field and on try number 5, Campbell hits Cooley with a great ball on a corner route to the back of the endzone for a touchdown.
The teams traded field goals in the third quarter, then Washington scored on a 63-yard drive highlighted by a 28-yard screen pass to Ladell Betts and capped off by a 6-yard Portis TD run to give Washington a 20-9 lead.
After a Philly field goal, Washington took over with 6:32 left and a chance to run out the clock. After a 4-yard Betts run, Saunders called a play-action pass that had Santana Moss streaking down the middle of the field a good eight yards behind the Eagles secondary. Somehow, Cambpell overthrew one of the fastest guys in the NFL by nearly 10 yards and missed a chance to clinch the game.
Philly took a Redskins punt at started at the 20-yard line with just under five minutes left in the game. McNabb led the Eagles down the field, including hitting Reggie Brown with a 19-yard completion on 4th and 5.
The Eagles had a first down on the Skins' 13-yard line with just over two minutes remaining in the game. The Skins defense held with great tackles and constant pressure on McNabb. Facing fourth and sixth, McNabb hit Kevin Curtis with a pass over the middle good enough for a first down. However, rookie safety LaRon Landry crushed Curtis and separated the man from the ball.
Last season, Washington lost three games in which they led by over ten points. This is usually a product of poor coaching, conservative play calling, and prevent defense. In Monday's game the Skins took a shot down the field with Moss and continued to blitz during the final drive. Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come this season.
Washington hosts the 0-2 NY Giants next Sunday, then gets the 2-0 Lions a week later. I predicted final scores of 24-17 and 35-24 in two Redskins victories.
Hopefully they won't prove me wrong in these games.

Dipping into the NFL - Week 2
Spent Week 1 playing my picks at the Imperial Palace Sportsbook in Vegas. Went 2-2-1 as the Redskins spread was -3 by the time I made it down on Sunday morning. However, I doubled-up my bet on the "LOTW" Seahawks and came out ahead. Here are The Dip's Week 2 picks(Home Team in CAPS and spreads based on Sportsbook.com lines).
For the Season: 2-2-1
PITTSBURGH (-10) over Buffalo - Buffalo held Denver to only 15 points in Week 1, but allowed over 500 yards of offense to Cutler, Henry, and Walker. Now, with three starters from week 1 out with injury and playing on the road, they could give up 700 yards to Big Ben, Parker, Ward, and Holmes. The ketchup will be flowing. The Steelers romp 30-13 at Heinz field.
New Orleans (-3) over TAMPA BAY - The Saints' players have had ten days to prepare for Tampa Bay and ten days to prepare to redeem themselves after an embarrassing loss to the Colts on national tv. Brees and the passing game should bounce back against a Bucs secondary without CB Brian Kelly. Without a viable #2 receiver for Tampa, the Saints can roll safety help to shitty corner Jason David, who allowed three TDs in the Colts game. "Cadillac" Williams is a game-time decision also. DEs Will Smith and Charles Grant should get pressure on QB Jeff Garcia who gets happy feet and might not stay in the pocket long enough to find WR Joey Galloway downfield. The Saints bounce back with a great offensive performance and win on the road 34-13.
Green Bay (+2.5) over NY GIANTS - The young Packer defense had McNabb running for his life last week and kept the Eagle offense off-balance the entire game. If Eli played, the Giants at home could pull off the victory. But with a bum shoulder, Eli is one hit away from taking a seat. With backup QB J-Load and RB Derrick Ward in the game, the Giants will find it hard to score. The loss of Osi Umenyiora hurts the Giants pass rush as Strahan is still working his way into game shape. Without pressure from their front four, the Giants will be forced to blitz and Favre will beat it with quick passes to Driver and Jones. Packers open the season at 2-0 with a 24-17 victory.
BEARS (-12) over Kansas City - Last year the Bears ate up teams at home. I would be very surprised if the Chiefs break double digits. Damon Huard is awful this year and after losing a tough game last week, the Bears will want to take it out on RB Larry Johnson and the Chiefs. Grossman usually has his good games against lesser opponents and WR Bernard Berrian was open a few times last week and Grossman missed him. That won't happen this week. Berrian will put up two scores with Chiefs best cover-corner Patrick Surtain likely out. The Chiefs starting WRs are rookie Dwayne Bowe and Samie Parker. With corners Tillman, Vasher, and Manning, Jr. able to go man-to-man, this leaves SS Adam Archuleta to move into the box and shadow LJ. Chicago returns to last seasons Super Bowl form with a convincing 27-10 victory.
Lock of the Week: Cincinnati (-7) over CLEVELAND - I'm actually pretty nervous about this "LOTW". Breaking rule #1 - "Never Bet against the Home Underdog" for the second straight week doesn't make sense. Add the facts that its a division rival, an in-state rival, and Bengal WR Chad Johnson is great at giving the opposition bulletin board material and you have all the makings of a last second 23-21 victory for Cincy on a field goal. But the disparity in talent is too great in this game. Browns RB Jamal Lewis looks like he's always running in quick sand and QB Derek Anderson has turned the ball over nine times in his last three starts. The Bengals defense was great at ball-hawking two years ago and this could be one of those five-pick games for the secondary. I think we see QB Brady Quinn in the second half but against a Bengal defense that will be teeing off on him playing with a twenty-plus lead. This is ugly for a second week in-a-row for the Browns as they lose 37-17.

Washington Redskins Season Preview
Mr. Poop will tell me I’m crazy. As a fellow Skins fan and eternal pessimist, The Poop will predict about 5-6 wins for this Skins team. I’m an optimist and like to think that a few close games will go in Washington’s favor.
Before taking a game-by-game look at the Redskins 2007 schedule, let me preface this with the following five things I believe heading into the season:
1. Clinton Portis will be healthy. Portis has been outspoken the past three seasons about his dislike of exhibition games. He feels that if guys like LaDanian Tomlinson do not have to play in preseason games, then neither should he. I believe the tendonitis in his knee was exaggerated to keep himself out of the exhibition games.
2. The offense will be better. Al Saunders has a notorious 400-page playbook. Every player has had time to learn more and the coaching staff will be able to expand the play-calling keeping defenses off balance. Kansas City was at the top of the NFL in offense during Saunders’ time there and Washington should start to climb towards the top half in 2007.
3. Jason Campbell will be in the upper-half of NFL quarterbacks in 2007. This doesn’t mean that he has to put up the numbers of Carson Palmer or Marc Bulger for the Skins to win. It means that he won’t kill drives with interceptions or fumbles and will scramble at the right times to keep drives alive. It means he’ll audible to the correct plays and take what defenses give him. But it also means that he’ll take chances down the field to stretch the defense and won’t miss open receivers.
4. The defense will be improved with the additions of LaRon Landry, London Fletcher, and Fred Smoot. Smoot was an excellent cover-corner during his seasons with the Skins, but seemed to lose his swagger while with the Vikings. I’m sure the Sex Boat scandal didn’t help matters either. London Fletcher-Baker is an excellent tackling linebacker and will immediately help the run defense. Plus, his leadership will help the learning curve of second-year LB Rocky McIntosh. Landry provides another run stopper at the line but also shows good cover skills and is a big time hitter. With improved personnel and a better secondary, defensive coordinator Greg Williams will have this unit back to the level they played at in 2005 when they were in the top ten.
5. They won’t choke away leads. With Portis and Betts both receiving carries, the Washington backfield will be fresh during the fourth quarter while opposing defenses will be tired. Both backs won’t go down with arm tackles and have the speed to break the long one as well as the power to grind out the tough yards.
So here’s my take on the upcoming season for the Skins. If I feel a game could go either way, I’ll give them the loss as a worst-case scenario.
Week 1 – Dolphins at Skins
The Dolphins looked out of sync during the preseason and new QB Trent Green is not mobile and hangs onto the ball too long. He always had TE Tony Gonzalez as a safety valve in Kansas City as well as Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson keeping the safeties in the box. Without Gonzalez and a shaky offensive line, I think Green is going to wish he didn’t push to join the Dolphins. I think Miami will get better as the season progresses but on the road in Week 1 is a great time for the Skins to face them. This will be a low scoring game as both offenses get up to speed. The Skins defense will blitz Green since WR Chris Chambers is really the only threat in the receiving corps. First round draft pick Ted Ginn, Jr. will get hit at the line by veteran corners Smoot and Carlos Rogers and the linebackers will keep Ronnie Brown from rushing for big yardage. The Skins running game will get stuffed by the Miami defense early but will wear down the defense by the fourth quarter and break some longer runs. WR Santana Moss should get deep for at least one pass in this game and the defense should get a fumble by Green to set up a short TD for the offense.
Prediction – Washington 24 – Miami 13 (Record 1-0)
Week 2 – Skins at Eagles on Monday night
The Skins never play well at the Eagles. RB Brian Westbrook will probably take a screen pass for a 40-plus yard touchdown and will gash the overly-aggressive Skins defense with draws and delays all game long. The Skins will run the ball against the Eagles, but with Philly’s quick-strike offense, will have to abandon hit in the second half. Campbell will get picked once by Dawkins and the Eagles crowd will be deafening. Not giving Washington a chance in this one.
Prediction – Philly 31 – Washington 17 (Record 1-1)
Week 3 – NY Giants at Washington
This week will be huge for Washington with the bye week up next. Tiki Barber ran wild on the Skins last year but Tiki is retired, finally. Safeties Landry and Sean Taylor will want to put big-time hits on TE Jeremy Shockey and WR Plaxico Burress. The Giants defense won’t be able to stop Portis and Betts and Cambell will have his best game of the first three.
Prediction – Washington 24 – Giants 17 (Record 2-1)
Week 5 – Detroit at Washington
With two weeks to prepare, Williams will have cornerbacks Smoot, Rogers, and Shawn Springs on the field to cover Detroits three-wide set of Roy Williams, Mike Furrey, and first-round draft pick Calvin Johnson. Lions QB John Kitna is turnover prone and should throw at least one pick and cough up a fumble. RB Tatum Bell ran all over the Skins while in Denver, but this isn’t the Bronco offensive line and OC Mike Martz loves to throw the ball around. The Detroit defense lost CB Dre Bly to Denver and Campbell should be able to hit Cooley and Moss all over the field. Big day for the Skins offense here.
Prediction – Washington 35 – Detroit 24 (Record 3-1)
Week 6 – Washington at Green Bay
Lambeau Field used to mean an automatic loss to any team unfortunate enough to have to travel there. Over the last couple seasons, however, Green Bay has been a friendly site for the opposition as the Packers have a losing record at home going 3-5 in 2005 and 2006. The Redskins will be making their first true road trip of the season with the Monday night game at nearby Philly the only other game away from Fedex. The Skins defense will handle WR Donald Driver and force Favre to go to young WRs Greg Jennings and James Jones. After a few shots from Taylor and Landry, these two will be alligator arming every ball across the middle. The Packers defense is much improved but the Skins should be able to run and before hitting Moss deep on play action. Moss’ speed should be too much to handle for aging cornerback Charles Woodson.
Prediction – Washington 27 – Green Bay 13 (Record 4-1)
Week 7 – Arizona at Washington
If this game was in Arizona, I would give the Cardinals the nod. But even with a new coaching staff and new attitude, these are still the Cardinals and they have shown the ability to find a way to lose on the road. The secondary will need to be on its game with WRs Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, and Bryant Johnson coming to town. I think that the front seven of the Skins should be able to contain RB Edgerrin James without the help of the extra safety, allowing Taylor and Landry to help cover the excellent receiving corps of the Cards. The Arizona defense played well last year, but the Skins running game will wear this thin unit down by early in the third quarter. At that point, Campbell will be able to find Cooley all over the field. I could see a Randle El punt return for a TD in this game and a key fumble recovery by the defense seals it.
Prediction – Washington 31 – Arizona 27 (Record 5-1)
Week 8 – Washington at New England
Tom Brady. Bill Belichick. Foxboro Stadium. No chance.
Prediction – New England 34 – Washington 13 (Record 5-2)
Week 9 – Washington at NY Jets
This is probably the most important game on the schedule. The difference between finishing the first eight games at 6-2 as opposed to 5-3 is enormous. Plus, avoiding two straight road losses will say a lot for this club. I think the Jets played well above their ability last year and should regress a little in 2007. RB Thomas Jones was a great acquisition for the Jets, but QB Chad Pennington and WRs Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery should not be able to bust loose on the Skins secondary. If the LBs can keep Jones at under four yards a carry and the corners keep Coles and Cotchery in front of them, the Skins should be able to steal a win from the Jets. Plus, a young, cocky receiver like Moss will love the chance to play big against his former team that he feels slighted him.
Prediction – Washington 23 – NY Jets 19 (Record 6-2)
After the first eight games of the season, the Skins have a legitimate shot to be 6-2. A great start like this will help increase the confidence of starting QB Campbell and lead to a great second half.
Week 10 – Philadelphia at Washington
I would like to think the Skins can pull this game out at Fedex Field, but beating the Eagles is never easy for Washington. This game has a chance to get moved to the Sunday night game on NBC and I think that stage belongs to QB Donovan McNabb. McNabb will have a great game and put a big hurt on the Skins with a road victory.
Prediction – Philadelphia 29 – Washington 21 (Record 6-3)
Week 11 – Washington at Dallas
The Philly game a week earlier is even bigger with a road game at Dallas a week later. It seems like Washington has won just once in Dallas in the last ten years. Joe Gibbs will have to do a great coaching job the week after this game to keep the Skins’ players from lowering their heads after a two-game losing skid. QB Tony Romo will have half a season under his belt and should be playing at a very high level. The home field advantage swings this game to the Cowboys, but the Skins will even this series at Fedex in week 17.
Prediction – Dallas 21 – Washington 17 (Record 6-4)
Week 12 – Washington at Tampa Bay
A second-straight road game and Washington’s history in Tampa has been up-and-down. They had a great defensive effort lead them to a playoff victory two years ago. I think we’ll see the same defensive performance lead the Skins to a victory in this match-up. Outside of WR Joey Galloway, no offensive players scare a defense. The front seven will control RB Cadillac Williams and keep pressure on QB Jeff Garcia. The key will be limiting Garcia’s yards on scrambles in third-down situations. Nothing kills a defense more than collapsing the pocket and having everybody covered but allow the quarterback to scramble up the middle for the first down. I think Taylor will shadow Garcia and Williams will have his defense blitz up the middle to contain Garcia. Tampa Bay will shut down the running game, but the Skins will go three-wide and throw all over the Bucs secondary. This is one road game toss-up that I’m giving to the Skins.
Prediction – Washington 23 – Tampa Bay 16 (Record 7-4)
Week 13 – Buffalo at Washington
Buffalo’s offense will be running well with rookie RB Marshawn Lynch and QB J.P. Losman and WR Lee Evans. Three great young players anchor the Bills offense. Unfortunately, the loss of CB Nate Clements and no defensive upgrades keep the Bills defense well behind the offense. The Skins will have to be very careful to not allow Evans to get deep. I think this will be a shootout to start, but the Skins will be able to roll on the Bills’ defense for the entire game. Campbell will have an excellent game and Portis and Betts may both go over 100 yards.
Prediction – Washington 38 – Buffalo 21 (Record 8-4)
Week 14 – Chicago at Washington
After an 8-4 start, the Skins will he very confident heading into this home game. I think they’ll have a shot, but for the sake of this forecast, we’ll call this game a loss. If the first 12 games go an predicted, I might change this score to a Washington victory.
Prediction – Chicago 17 – Washington 14 (Record 8-5)
Week 15 – Washington at NY Giants
Scheduled for a Sunday night NBC game, this will probably get bumped due to the Giants lackluster season to this point. QB Eli Manning will turn the ball over and the Skins will stuff RB Brandon Jacobs at the line. Portis and Betts will run well, allowing Campbell to hit Cooley and Moss on play action passes. I think the defense returns a pick for a touchdown in this one.
Prediction – Washington 28 – NY Giants 14 (Record 9-5)
Week 16 – Washington at Minnesota
Minnesota is one year away from being a good team. QB Tavaris Jackson is not ready to be an NFL quarterback and the receiving corps underachieves. New additions WR Bobby Wade and rookie RB Adrian Peterson will have good seasons for the Vikings but won’t be enough to change games. The Vikings defense was awful against the pass in 2006 and losing CB Fred Smoot to the Skins will not improve the unit. Plus, Minnesota defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin is now coaching the Steelers and Smoot will be able to help prepare the offense. After throwing for the first three quarters, Portis and Betts will keep the clock rolling through the fourth with hard-nosed running.
Prediction – Washington 24 – Minnesota 16 (Record 10-5)
Week 17 – Dallas at Washington
Revenge. Hatred. Playoff spot. Three reasons the Skins will be ramped up for the season-finale at Fedex Field. Portis and Betts will have to have a great game to keep the Cowboys from blitzing Campbell constantly. Quick passes to Cooley, Moss, and Randle El as well as screen passes to Portis and Betts will help keep the defense off balance. Landry and Taylor will have to blast Owens on his first couple of crossing routes to throw him off. Once he’s hit a couple times, he’s much more prone to drops. Fletcher and McIntosh will have to check TE Jason Witten in the middle of the field and RB Marion Barber on swing passes. I think the defense will be up to the challenge and Fedex Field will be rocking on December 30.
Prediction – Washington 23 – Dallas 21 (Record 11-5)
So Washington finishes with an 11-5 record and a huge turnaround from 2006. I think that the Tampa Bay, NY Giants, and NY Jets road games could go either way, but a 9-7 record could be enough for a playoff spot this season. As long as health issues to major players do not arise with this team, 9-7 should be easy. The offensive line needs to gel together, Portis and Betts need to form a great 1-2 punch, and Randle El and Brandon Lloyd need step up for the passing game. It could be a great season for Skins fans in 2007.
Before taking a game-by-game look at the Redskins 2007 schedule, let me preface this with the following five things I believe heading into the season:
1. Clinton Portis will be healthy. Portis has been outspoken the past three seasons about his dislike of exhibition games. He feels that if guys like LaDanian Tomlinson do not have to play in preseason games, then neither should he. I believe the tendonitis in his knee was exaggerated to keep himself out of the exhibition games.
2. The offense will be better. Al Saunders has a notorious 400-page playbook. Every player has had time to learn more and the coaching staff will be able to expand the play-calling keeping defenses off balance. Kansas City was at the top of the NFL in offense during Saunders’ time there and Washington should start to climb towards the top half in 2007.
3. Jason Campbell will be in the upper-half of NFL quarterbacks in 2007. This doesn’t mean that he has to put up the numbers of Carson Palmer or Marc Bulger for the Skins to win. It means that he won’t kill drives with interceptions or fumbles and will scramble at the right times to keep drives alive. It means he’ll audible to the correct plays and take what defenses give him. But it also means that he’ll take chances down the field to stretch the defense and won’t miss open receivers.
4. The defense will be improved with the additions of LaRon Landry, London Fletcher, and Fred Smoot. Smoot was an excellent cover-corner during his seasons with the Skins, but seemed to lose his swagger while with the Vikings. I’m sure the Sex Boat scandal didn’t help matters either. London Fletcher-Baker is an excellent tackling linebacker and will immediately help the run defense. Plus, his leadership will help the learning curve of second-year LB Rocky McIntosh. Landry provides another run stopper at the line but also shows good cover skills and is a big time hitter. With improved personnel and a better secondary, defensive coordinator Greg Williams will have this unit back to the level they played at in 2005 when they were in the top ten.
5. They won’t choke away leads. With Portis and Betts both receiving carries, the Washington backfield will be fresh during the fourth quarter while opposing defenses will be tired. Both backs won’t go down with arm tackles and have the speed to break the long one as well as the power to grind out the tough yards.
So here’s my take on the upcoming season for the Skins. If I feel a game could go either way, I’ll give them the loss as a worst-case scenario.
Week 1 – Dolphins at Skins
The Dolphins looked out of sync during the preseason and new QB Trent Green is not mobile and hangs onto the ball too long. He always had TE Tony Gonzalez as a safety valve in Kansas City as well as Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson keeping the safeties in the box. Without Gonzalez and a shaky offensive line, I think Green is going to wish he didn’t push to join the Dolphins. I think Miami will get better as the season progresses but on the road in Week 1 is a great time for the Skins to face them. This will be a low scoring game as both offenses get up to speed. The Skins defense will blitz Green since WR Chris Chambers is really the only threat in the receiving corps. First round draft pick Ted Ginn, Jr. will get hit at the line by veteran corners Smoot and Carlos Rogers and the linebackers will keep Ronnie Brown from rushing for big yardage. The Skins running game will get stuffed by the Miami defense early but will wear down the defense by the fourth quarter and break some longer runs. WR Santana Moss should get deep for at least one pass in this game and the defense should get a fumble by Green to set up a short TD for the offense.
Prediction – Washington 24 – Miami 13 (Record 1-0)
Week 2 – Skins at Eagles on Monday night
The Skins never play well at the Eagles. RB Brian Westbrook will probably take a screen pass for a 40-plus yard touchdown and will gash the overly-aggressive Skins defense with draws and delays all game long. The Skins will run the ball against the Eagles, but with Philly’s quick-strike offense, will have to abandon hit in the second half. Campbell will get picked once by Dawkins and the Eagles crowd will be deafening. Not giving Washington a chance in this one.
Prediction – Philly 31 – Washington 17 (Record 1-1)
Week 3 – NY Giants at Washington
This week will be huge for Washington with the bye week up next. Tiki Barber ran wild on the Skins last year but Tiki is retired, finally. Safeties Landry and Sean Taylor will want to put big-time hits on TE Jeremy Shockey and WR Plaxico Burress. The Giants defense won’t be able to stop Portis and Betts and Cambell will have his best game of the first three.
Prediction – Washington 24 – Giants 17 (Record 2-1)
Week 5 – Detroit at Washington
With two weeks to prepare, Williams will have cornerbacks Smoot, Rogers, and Shawn Springs on the field to cover Detroits three-wide set of Roy Williams, Mike Furrey, and first-round draft pick Calvin Johnson. Lions QB John Kitna is turnover prone and should throw at least one pick and cough up a fumble. RB Tatum Bell ran all over the Skins while in Denver, but this isn’t the Bronco offensive line and OC Mike Martz loves to throw the ball around. The Detroit defense lost CB Dre Bly to Denver and Campbell should be able to hit Cooley and Moss all over the field. Big day for the Skins offense here.
Prediction – Washington 35 – Detroit 24 (Record 3-1)
Week 6 – Washington at Green Bay
Lambeau Field used to mean an automatic loss to any team unfortunate enough to have to travel there. Over the last couple seasons, however, Green Bay has been a friendly site for the opposition as the Packers have a losing record at home going 3-5 in 2005 and 2006. The Redskins will be making their first true road trip of the season with the Monday night game at nearby Philly the only other game away from Fedex. The Skins defense will handle WR Donald Driver and force Favre to go to young WRs Greg Jennings and James Jones. After a few shots from Taylor and Landry, these two will be alligator arming every ball across the middle. The Packers defense is much improved but the Skins should be able to run and before hitting Moss deep on play action. Moss’ speed should be too much to handle for aging cornerback Charles Woodson.
Prediction – Washington 27 – Green Bay 13 (Record 4-1)
Week 7 – Arizona at Washington
If this game was in Arizona, I would give the Cardinals the nod. But even with a new coaching staff and new attitude, these are still the Cardinals and they have shown the ability to find a way to lose on the road. The secondary will need to be on its game with WRs Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, and Bryant Johnson coming to town. I think that the front seven of the Skins should be able to contain RB Edgerrin James without the help of the extra safety, allowing Taylor and Landry to help cover the excellent receiving corps of the Cards. The Arizona defense played well last year, but the Skins running game will wear this thin unit down by early in the third quarter. At that point, Campbell will be able to find Cooley all over the field. I could see a Randle El punt return for a TD in this game and a key fumble recovery by the defense seals it.
Prediction – Washington 31 – Arizona 27 (Record 5-1)
Week 8 – Washington at New England
Tom Brady. Bill Belichick. Foxboro Stadium. No chance.
Prediction – New England 34 – Washington 13 (Record 5-2)
Week 9 – Washington at NY Jets
This is probably the most important game on the schedule. The difference between finishing the first eight games at 6-2 as opposed to 5-3 is enormous. Plus, avoiding two straight road losses will say a lot for this club. I think the Jets played well above their ability last year and should regress a little in 2007. RB Thomas Jones was a great acquisition for the Jets, but QB Chad Pennington and WRs Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery should not be able to bust loose on the Skins secondary. If the LBs can keep Jones at under four yards a carry and the corners keep Coles and Cotchery in front of them, the Skins should be able to steal a win from the Jets. Plus, a young, cocky receiver like Moss will love the chance to play big against his former team that he feels slighted him.
Prediction – Washington 23 – NY Jets 19 (Record 6-2)
After the first eight games of the season, the Skins have a legitimate shot to be 6-2. A great start like this will help increase the confidence of starting QB Campbell and lead to a great second half.
Week 10 – Philadelphia at Washington
I would like to think the Skins can pull this game out at Fedex Field, but beating the Eagles is never easy for Washington. This game has a chance to get moved to the Sunday night game on NBC and I think that stage belongs to QB Donovan McNabb. McNabb will have a great game and put a big hurt on the Skins with a road victory.
Prediction – Philadelphia 29 – Washington 21 (Record 6-3)
Week 11 – Washington at Dallas
The Philly game a week earlier is even bigger with a road game at Dallas a week later. It seems like Washington has won just once in Dallas in the last ten years. Joe Gibbs will have to do a great coaching job the week after this game to keep the Skins’ players from lowering their heads after a two-game losing skid. QB Tony Romo will have half a season under his belt and should be playing at a very high level. The home field advantage swings this game to the Cowboys, but the Skins will even this series at Fedex in week 17.
Prediction – Dallas 21 – Washington 17 (Record 6-4)
Week 12 – Washington at Tampa Bay
A second-straight road game and Washington’s history in Tampa has been up-and-down. They had a great defensive effort lead them to a playoff victory two years ago. I think we’ll see the same defensive performance lead the Skins to a victory in this match-up. Outside of WR Joey Galloway, no offensive players scare a defense. The front seven will control RB Cadillac Williams and keep pressure on QB Jeff Garcia. The key will be limiting Garcia’s yards on scrambles in third-down situations. Nothing kills a defense more than collapsing the pocket and having everybody covered but allow the quarterback to scramble up the middle for the first down. I think Taylor will shadow Garcia and Williams will have his defense blitz up the middle to contain Garcia. Tampa Bay will shut down the running game, but the Skins will go three-wide and throw all over the Bucs secondary. This is one road game toss-up that I’m giving to the Skins.
Prediction – Washington 23 – Tampa Bay 16 (Record 7-4)
Week 13 – Buffalo at Washington
Buffalo’s offense will be running well with rookie RB Marshawn Lynch and QB J.P. Losman and WR Lee Evans. Three great young players anchor the Bills offense. Unfortunately, the loss of CB Nate Clements and no defensive upgrades keep the Bills defense well behind the offense. The Skins will have to be very careful to not allow Evans to get deep. I think this will be a shootout to start, but the Skins will be able to roll on the Bills’ defense for the entire game. Campbell will have an excellent game and Portis and Betts may both go over 100 yards.
Prediction – Washington 38 – Buffalo 21 (Record 8-4)
Week 14 – Chicago at Washington
After an 8-4 start, the Skins will he very confident heading into this home game. I think they’ll have a shot, but for the sake of this forecast, we’ll call this game a loss. If the first 12 games go an predicted, I might change this score to a Washington victory.
Prediction – Chicago 17 – Washington 14 (Record 8-5)
Week 15 – Washington at NY Giants
Scheduled for a Sunday night NBC game, this will probably get bumped due to the Giants lackluster season to this point. QB Eli Manning will turn the ball over and the Skins will stuff RB Brandon Jacobs at the line. Portis and Betts will run well, allowing Campbell to hit Cooley and Moss on play action passes. I think the defense returns a pick for a touchdown in this one.
Prediction – Washington 28 – NY Giants 14 (Record 9-5)
Week 16 – Washington at Minnesota
Minnesota is one year away from being a good team. QB Tavaris Jackson is not ready to be an NFL quarterback and the receiving corps underachieves. After Week 1
PPD went 3-3 with his picks on Saturday's games. He correctly called the road covers by East Carolina and Georgia Tech and California's home victory over Tennessee.
However, The Dip backed PPD on only one correct call - Georgia Tech. I took losers Oklahoma State and Auburn. OSU was never in the game against Georgia and Auburn scored a couple late touchdowns to pick up the win but not the cover.

Huge Slate of Games Today

With college football season officially underway, there are a full schedule of games today for PPD to handicap for The Dip. While he'll be on the road today travelling to our Fantasy Football Draft (more on this later), he gives a list of games to check out at The Pride and The Pagentry.

Great Start
PP Derek started off The Dip's football season at 1-0 with his spot-on prediction of the LSU-Miss St. game.

"No way in hell Mississippi State is scoring more than 10 points in this game. They probably won’t even get in the end zone... LSU should get at least one defensive touchdown and a couple offensive ones. I like them at least 31 to 3."

The final exhibition game before the start of the preseason is always showcase of the second and third-string stars. Sometimes fourth string.
The big story from this game was Skins QB Jason Campbell. After suffering a knee bruise two weeks ago, fans were worried about Campbell being ready for the season-opener against Miami.
But Campbell made it onto the field and looked no worse for wear following his absence from the practice field. Completing all five of his pass attempts, Campbell threw a perfectly-placed touchdown pass to WR Antwaan Randel El from 23 yards out.
The defense continued its strong play and seems to be primed for a good season.

LSU leads Mississippi State 17-0 at the half.

World Wrestling Entertainment announced the suspension of 10 of its wrestlers on Thursday for violating its "wellness policy."
As part of its investigation into online pharmacies and their doctors, the Albany, N.Y., district attorney's office has been gathering information about steroid use by WWE wrestlers.
The WWE did not release the names of those suspended. The current practice of the WWE is not to to release the names of those who have been suspended. However, all wrestlers under contract received word that as of November 1, any suspended for violation of the Wellness Policy will be made public.
One of the pharmacies under investigation, Signature of Orlando, had a client list of the following wrestlers: "The Animal" Bautista, Adam "Edge" Copeland, Chris "Masters" Mordetsky, John "Johnny Nitro" Hennigan, and Shane "The Hurricane" Helms.
In an bizarre twist, three other wrestlers were former Signature of Orlando clients. Chris Benoit, who killed his wife and son before hanging himself in June, as well as recently deceased wrestlers Eddie Guerrero and Brian "Crush" Adams.

It Tastes So Good When it Hits Your Lips...
For the past couple of weeks I've been feeling a little itchy. I tried different powders and creams, but as we neared the end of summer, I realized that my itch was an old friend returning for another visit.
(Recreational) Gambling on football. Around the start of football season I get like Frank the Tank after a couple of funnels. There is nothing like the thrill of having an underdog cover or a late defensive stand allowing a favorite to cover the spread.
On the flip side, there is nothing like a couple of bad beats that make you want to stab somebody. Ben Roethlisberger, Mike Vanderjagt, Drew Bledsoe highlight last season's list of "Guys I'd Like to Stab in an Alley".
1. Steelers at Oakland - Roethlisberger throws a million picks, two returned for touchdowns, in a horrible road loss to Oakland. Pittsburgh loses despite only giving up 50 yards of offense to the Raiders.
2. Cowboys at Redskins - Boys are a 1 point favorite. Tie game with six left in the fourth and the "drunken kicker" gets his attempt blocked. Sean Taylor picks up the ball, returns it to Dallas territory and gets facemasked while tackled. On the final play with time expired, a Nick Novak 47-yard field goal won it for the Skins.
3. Cowboys at Eagles - Have the Cowboys +8 and the score is 31-24 with a minute left. The Cowboys are driving late in the fourth for the tying touchdown. A sure cover by the underdog at this point. Either the Eagles hold and the Boys cover or Dallas scores and covers. Bledsoe throws a weak out-route and its jumped on by Lito Shepherd, who returns it 102 yards for a touchdown. Bledsoe blows the game and the cover. That one hurt.

On the flip side, there is nothing like a couple of bad beats that make you want to stab somebody. Ben Roethlisberger, Mike Vanderjagt, Drew Bledsoe highlight last season's list of "Guys I'd Like to Stab in an Alley".
1. Steelers at Oakland - Roethlisberger throws a million picks, two returned for touchdowns, in a horrible road loss to Oakland. Pittsburgh loses despite only giving up 50 yards of offense to the Raiders.
2. Cowboys at Redskins - Boys are a 1 point favorite. Tie game with six left in the fourth and the "drunken kicker" gets his attempt blocked. Sean Taylor picks up the ball, returns it to Dallas territory and gets facemasked while tackled. On the final play with time expired, a Nick Novak 47-yard field goal won it for the Skins.
3. Cowboys at Eagles - Have the Cowboys +8 and the score is 31-24 with a minute left. The Cowboys are driving late in the fourth for the tying touchdown. A sure cover by the underdog at this point. Either the Eagles hold and the Boys cover or Dallas scores and covers. Bledsoe throws a weak out-route and its jumped on by Lito Shepherd, who returns it 102 yards for a touchdown. Bledsoe blows the game and the cover. That one hurt.

Revenge of the Nerd II
New Jersey nerd George Hotz traded his cracked iPhone for as what describes as "a sweet Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones."
The 17-year old Star Wars fan agreed to the deal with CertiCell, a cell phone repair company in Louisville, KY.
People in Kentucky have cell phones? I guess it makes it easier to call to try to get on the Jerry Springer or Maury Povich shows.
The three iPhones are being sent to the three online partners who helped Hotz modify the phone while Hotz is keeping the car.
It took the group over 500 hours to complete the process. Nearly 8 hours a day since the iPhone debuted on June 29.

Skins-Ravens Preseason Game Notes...
-- Game was delayed for over an hour due to lightning. Not just in the area, lightning actually hit the stadium and shorted out all the television cameras and radio equipment. A local reporter for CBS affiliate WUSA-9 not only saw the lightning strike, but felt it as it sent a current through his earpiece into his head. He was ok, but that must have been hilarious to see.
-- The game was called in the third quarter after more lightning. With the Skins' history of preseason injuries, there was no reason to be on a wet field playing against that defense.
-- Best part of the night for Redskins fans occurred before the kickoff. Starting QB Jason Campbell was taking snaps and running drills during warm-ups. His knee seems healthy and he looked quick and mobile. I think he's going to have a pretty good year. Collins seems serviceable, and Brunell needs to be traded or cut.
-- Santana Moss caught a 40-yard pass in the first quarter. Hopefully his hamstrings stay connected to his bones this season.
-- The defense looked great again, although Rocky McIntosh missed an open field tackle on a 3rd-and-goal play. It was the first touchdown the starting defense allowed this preseason. The front four got pressure, the linebackers were all over the field, and the secondary can lay some hits. Rookie LaRon Landry made some great plays and is going to have a great season. The only TD for the Skins came on an interception return after the second-team lineman collapsed the pocket on Kyle Boller and knocked the ball into the air. Rookie linebacker Dallas Sartz caught the ball and took it the three yards for the score.
If the offense can put up 21-24 points per game, I think the Skins can surprise a lot of teams in the NFC. The entire East division has question marks, and while the Eagles and Cowboys are the favorites, I think the Skins could win 9 games and push for a playoff spot.
Of course, this all depends on the health of starting RB Clinton Portis. His physical health, definitely not his mental health.

Review of the Redskins-Ravens preseason game tomorrow.
The game was postponed for over an hour due to lightning at Fedex Field. Lightning actually hit the stadium and took out all the cameras. One of the local sports guys was walking through with his ear-piece in and it sent a shock through his head. That's crazy.

10:04 - You got to love Joe Rogan. He gets so excited about the fights, knows everything about the sport, and makes great observations. Best color guy in sports.
10:05 - I have no idea how to say Georges St-Pierre's names. There is some syllable between the "George" and the "Saint" but God help me I can't figure out what they say.
10:07 - Only one title fight on this card (title bouts are scheduled for five rounds) so they should get to a couple of the undercard fights. Usually the best knockouts and submissions are on the undercard.
10:10 - Kendall Grove vs. Patrick Cote (pronounced co-TEH)
Grove is a former Ultimate Fighter winner while Cote was a finalist in the UF Comeback season. Cote had a great fight with Tito Ortiz, Kendall Grove's coach in TUF and "mentor" of sorts.
10:11 - Grove comes out to Californication by the Chili Peppers and has on a "Hannibal Lecter" mask from Silence of the Lambs. He's a tall kid for the middleweight class at 6'6".
10:14 - Bruce Buffer, the official voice of the UFC, starts the announcements. What ever happened to Michael Buffer? Does he still do WWE events? Does he do boxing PPVs? Does anybody even watch boxing PPVs? Michael Buffer must feel like what Frank Stallone would have felt like if he got to play Rocky in the new movie.
10:15 - ROUND ONE - Cote keeps Grove up against the cage in the clinch delivering a few knees. Grove's arms are so long, he's able to use his left hand to reach around Cote's back and punch him in the right side of the face. Think about that. Crazy. Referee Booker T (Herb Dean) breaks them up and they start again. Back to the clinch against the fence with the fighters exchanging knees. Cote tries a lift and nearly gets Grove to the mat but is unable to finish. Grove lands a good right hand and a couple of head kicks.
COTE drops Grove with a right hand and gets FULL MOUNT. He's raining blows down on Grove. Grove is not defending himself and HERB DEAN CALLS A STOP TO THE FIGHT. Cote wins by strikes.
Reply shows Cote hit Grove with a stiff right-hand directly behind Grove's left ear.

10:23 - Kobe Bryant is in the house! What a round of boos from the crowd when he's shown. Love UFC fans. His wife looks hot at least. And he's really, really, rich so it still doesn't suck to be him.
10:24 - They show Randy Couture entering the building earlier in the night. His wife looks hot too.
10:25 - Only problem with UFC PPVs is they constantly show previews for the next PPV. Wastes time. But I guess they have to clean up the cage before the next fight.
10:26 - UFC signs Wanderlie Silva to return to the light heavyweight division for the first time since 2000. Silva is a Brazilian fighter and will probably get an immediate title shot against the winner of the Rampage Jackson/Dan Henderson fight next month.
10:30 - FIGHT TWO - Light Heavyweights Joe "Daddy" Stevenson against Kurt Pellegrino.
No word on if Pellegrino likes his family's water, but he is from Point Pleasant, NJ so he's a huge douche. Joe Stevenson won the Ultimate Fighter II season and turned pro the day before his 17th birthday. So no jokes about him. He might be one of my new favorite fighters as he comes to the ring with a rap remix of "You're The Best" from the Karate Kid. Hopefully leg sweeps are legal.
10:36 - ROUND 1 - Side note, I just realized I paused live tv a while ago so my times are probably way off. But that's the time I'm watching it.
Fighters are feeling each other out. Stevenson is a great wrestler so will be looking for the takedown then ground and pound. A good knee by Stevenson, but Pellegrino shoots in and gets a takedown.
There is a ridiculous amount of blood on the mat and its not from any fight we've seen so far, so we better get to see that fight.
Stevenson reverses position and gets Pellegrino's back. Huge suplex by Stevenson, dropping Pellegrino right on the back of his neck. Pellegrino gets a reversal and is now back on top. Stevenson is in full guard against the cage. Pellegrino is trying to pass guard, but can't. Under a minute left, referee Big John McCarthy should stand this up. Stevenson seems to be doing most of the damage from the bottom, landing some shots and not taking any. Finally a big right by Pellegrino rocks Stevenson right before the bell. Probably give that round to Pellegrino, but that suplex by Stevenson was awesome.
SECOND ROUND - Lots of dancing to start. A couple of good knees and jabs by Stevenson. A slip by Pellegrino and he takes a couple of shots while on the ground. Big uppercut by Pellegrino. Stevenson takes a couple body shots which apparently really pissed him off as he just bull rushes Pellegrino to the ground and mounts him. Stevenson opens a cut on Pellegrino's forehead with an amazing elbow. Stevenson gets Pellegrino's back and gets one leg hook in. Tries for a rear naked choke but can't hit it. KP manages to reverse position and mounts Daddy. KP stands holding one leg and lands a great right hand and gets back on top. Round ends wrestling. Round probably for Stevenson.
10:48 - The "Iceman" Chuck Lidell is there. Huge crowd pop. If he walked over and punched Kobe, I think everybody would die from the excitement.
THIRD ROUND - They trade shots. JS is pressing the action, but Pellegrino lands a big takedown. No action so they stand back up. Pellegrino gets JS in a deep guillotine, but can't hold it. Stevenson gets his head out and lands some good shots. He has P pressed hard against the cage and he can't move. Stevenson is landing shot after shot. This is going to get called if he doesn't do anything. Lets him up a little and lands bigs knees. Pellegrino and Stevenson trade reversals and Stevenson gets back on top. This round goes to Stevenson and it probably clinched the fight for him.
10:54 - Lee Majors is in attendance. I'm surprised most people know who he is. Joe Stevenson wins 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28. At least one ref saw the same fight I did. Stevenson wins by unanimous decision.
10:56 - Tito Ortiz and Jenna Jameson are there. Jameson looks really different with the short hair and smaller chest. Interesting look. I probably wouldn't say good.
11:01 - FIGHT THREE - Alberto Crane vs. Roger Huerta
I'm going to take this fight off. Doing a diary is hard work. I have much respect for Bill Simmons although he probably doesn't do them live. That would be so much easier.
This fight was awesome. Huerta never gets tired. He landed so many blows from the top for the first two rounds. In the third, Crane was so tired that he literally could not stand. He just laid on his back. He did catch Huerta in an ankle lock and got Huerta's back. Huerta was on his knees facing away from Crane with Crane behind him.
In the best thing I've seen watching UFC, Huerta was using the big screen to see where Crane's head was behind him. He would look at the screen and throw elbows when he saw Crane stick his head to the side, landing the blows on Crane's head. Its hard to describe to get the full effect but it was incredible. Huerta won when the fight was stopped due to strikes.
11:31 - FIGHT FOUR - Josh Koscheck vs. Georges St.-Pierre
I have to admit that I am a St-Pierre fan. I think he's a phenomenal fighter and athlete and is probably going to win this fight. He is probably right behind BJ Penn as the best all-around fighter in the UFC. He looks really focused and really pissed, and I'm a little nervous for Koscheck.
Good fight. GSP looked awesome. He came out and took Kos down but Kos reversed it and really dominated from the top. Koscheck won round one.
GSP took Kos down again in round two and rode him the whole round. Tried a couple submissions but Kos wouldn't allow it. He really looked out of his element on his back. In fact, his junior year at Edinboro he didn't surrender one takedown in any of his 42 victories. Not one. GSP is making it look easy.
With the bout tied going into the third round, Kos and GSP traded punches for the first couple of minutes with GSP getting the better of it. Kos shot in and got a single-leg, but wasn't able to get GSP down. GSP actually worked out of the single-leg and got Kos to his back again. He rode out the final couple minutes and won the unanimous decision (30-27; 29-28; 29-28).
Rogan made a point during the last fight about the 10-point scoring system used in MMA and boxing and how it is a flawed system. Two fights on this card had judges scores that didn't make sense. No way GSP won round one. I think both sports need to find a way to take judges' perceptions out of the equation. I don't have a solution. I'm just complaining.
I think GSP will beat the winner of the Hughes/Serra fight. It depends on what BJ Penn decides to do. If he moves back up to this weight class, he might get the shot if Hughes wins. If Serra wins, they'll probably give GSP the rematch, with Hughes fighting Penn. Koscheck is still in this mix but needs to win his next fight in a very convincing manner.
12:07 - TIME FOR THE MAIN EVENT - Heavyweight Title Fight

Couture walks out to Black in Back with an "Affliction" t-shirt that I've seen all over now. Need to find out what that's all about. He's 44-years old. That's nuts.
12: 17 - ROUND ONE - Trading tons of punches. Randy lands a good left hook and then takes Gonzaga down. Couture lands a huge slam, but Gonzaga gets right back up. Huge slam but couldn't keep him down. Gonzaga lands a big elbow and left hand, but Couture goes back to the clinch. Gonzaga is bleeding from the nose. Gonzaga is wide-mouthed and his taking big breaths already. That's not good news for him. Couture is really well conditioned and the longer this goes, he definitely has an advantage. Lots of good shots by Couture in the clinch. Elbows.
Gonzaga spits a huge amount of blood out of his mouth. He grabs Couture in a guillotine but the round is over. Round one definitely to Couture.
12:23 - ROUND TWO - Gonzaga goes to high kick but Couture ducks it and shoots in for the clinch. Randy is ducking punches and giving his own.
Gonzaga asks for time and says he can't see. He says he wants to continue but that he can't see. There is no blood on his face so not sure what he is talking about. The get back into same position and Herb Dean takes a point from Gonzaga for holding onto the fence. Couture is landing lots of blows from the clinch position and Gonzaga does not look good. More and more hooks and uppercuts by Couture. If Randy gets a takedown this is going to be over quick. Uppercut after uppercut. Gonzaga isn't doing anything at this point. Round over and won convincingly by Couture. Even without the point deduction.
12:39 - ROUND THREE - Gonzaga might quit in this round. He looks like he wants to cry and has the proverbial "crimson mask". Gonzaga lands a kick and needs to keep this fight at a distance. Gonzaga lands a huge kick and rocks Randy's head back but he goes right back into the clinch and takes control. Any other fighter and the crowd would boo. But Couture gets a takedown and starts pounding Gonzaga. You can hear Herb Dean saying he's going to stop it unless he starts defending himself but he's got no shot. About five or six more shots and Dean stops it. Couture wins by strikes.
It's amazing how people continue to doubt Randy Couture. This guy is amazing. He's smart and tough and very humble. Its very refreshing to see an athlete like Couture compete.
Of course, there is 25 minutes left in the PPV but rather than show a fight taped earlier in the night, they give me a recap of the fight week leading up to the event. Now a preview for the Ultimate Fighter. I'm sure I won't see this on Spike TV every five minutes for the next month. This should be a good season though. Serra will be a great coach and Matt Hughes is a dick. Seriously, this guy is a huge dick. But it should make for good television.
12:43 - Looks like we're going to get another fight. Ryan Jensen vs. Thales Leites.
ROUND ONE - Leites is getting dominated but catches Jensen in an armbar for a submission victory. I like fights like this when somebody pulls a submission out of nowhere.

Overall it was a great PPV and worthy of the $40. The Huerta fight was excellent, as was the Couture/Gonzaga bout. Koscheck's fight was disappointing, but I think he'll come back a better fighter after having his ass handed to him by being outwrestled by GSP.

Rogan made a point during the last fight about the 10-point scoring system used in MMA and boxing and how it is a flawed system. Two fights on this card had judges scores that didn't make sense. No way GSP won round one. I think both sports need to find a way to take judges' perceptions out of the equation. I don't have a solution. I'm just complaining.
I think GSP will beat the winner of the Hughes/Serra fight. It depends on what BJ Penn decides to do. If he moves back up to this weight class, he might get the shot if Hughes wins. If Serra wins, they'll probably give GSP the rematch, with Hughes fighting Penn. Koscheck is still in this mix but needs to win his next fight in a very convincing manner.
12:07 - TIME FOR THE MAIN EVENT - Heavyweight Title Fight
Randy "The Natural" Couture vs. Gabriel Gonzaga
Couture walks out to Black in Back with an "Affliction" t-shirt that I've seen all over now. Need to find out what that's all about. He's 44-years old. That's nuts.
12: 17 - ROUND ONE - Trading tons of punches. Randy lands a good left hook and then takes Gonzaga down. Couture lands a huge slam, but Gonzaga gets right back up. Huge slam but couldn't keep him down. Gonzaga lands a big elbow and left hand, but Couture goes back to the clinch. Gonzaga is bleeding from the nose. Gonzaga is wide-mouthed and his taking big breaths already. That's not good news for him. Couture is really well conditioned and the longer this goes, he definitely has an advantage. Lots of good shots by Couture in the clinch. Elbows.
Gonzaga spits a huge amount of blood out of his mouth. He grabs Couture in a guillotine but the round is over. Round one definitely to Couture.
12:23 - ROUND TWO - Gonzaga goes to high kick but Couture ducks it and shoots in for the clinch. Randy is ducking punches and giving his own.
Gonzaga asks for time and says he can't see. He says he wants to continue but that he can't see. There is no blood on his face so not sure what he is talking about. The get back into same position and Herb Dean takes a point from Gonzaga for holding onto the fence. Couture is landing lots of blows from the clinch position and Gonzaga does not look good. More and more hooks and uppercuts by Couture. If Randy gets a takedown this is going to be over quick. Uppercut after uppercut. Gonzaga isn't doing anything at this point. Round over and won convincingly by Couture. Even without the point deduction.
12:39 - ROUND THREE - Gonzaga might quit in this round. He looks like he wants to cry and has the proverbial "crimson mask". Gonzaga lands a kick and needs to keep this fight at a distance. Gonzaga lands a huge kick and rocks Randy's head back but he goes right back into the clinch and takes control. Any other fighter and the crowd would boo. But Couture gets a takedown and starts pounding Gonzaga. You can hear Herb Dean saying he's going to stop it unless he starts defending himself but he's got no shot. About five or six more shots and Dean stops it. Couture wins by strikes.
It's amazing how people continue to doubt Randy Couture. This guy is amazing. He's smart and tough and very humble. Its very refreshing to see an athlete like Couture compete.
Of course, there is 25 minutes left in the PPV but rather than show a fight taped earlier in the night, they give me a recap of the fight week leading up to the event. Now a preview for the Ultimate Fighter. I'm sure I won't see this on Spike TV every five minutes for the next month. This should be a good season though. Serra will be a great coach and Matt Hughes is a dick. Seriously, this guy is a huge dick. But it should make for good television.
12:43 - Looks like we're going to get another fight. Ryan Jensen vs. Thales Leites.
ROUND ONE - Leites is getting dominated but catches Jensen in an armbar for a submission victory. I like fights like this when somebody pulls a submission out of nowhere.
There were three fights not aired that can be seen on UFC.com tomorrow.
Overall it was a great PPV and worthy of the $40. The Huerta fight was excellent, as was the Couture/Gonzaga bout. Koscheck's fight was disappointing, but I think he'll come back a better fighter after having his ass handed to him by being outwrestled by GSP.
Oh, and it seems his name is pronouced George Rush St.-Pierre.

UFC74 - Respect
I'll be ordering the UFC74-Respect PPV on Saturday night. I'm planning on doing a play-by-play for each round of each fight on the Dip.
I'm a big UFC fan but I'm especially interested in this PPV since Josh Koscheck is fighting Georges St-Pierre. Koscheck is a fellow Edinboro University of PA alumnus and I was the Sports Information Director for the wrestling team during his 42-0 season when he captured the 174-pound National Championship.
It was probably the most exciting job I ever had and attending the Division I wrestling championships in St. Louis and Iowa City (the location when Koscheck one) were incredible experiences.
With a victory over St-Pierre, Koscheck should be next in line to fight the winner of the Matt Serra/Matt Hughes bout that concludes the upcoming Ultimate Fighter series. Unfortunately, Koscheck is still maturing as a fighter and relies on his wrestling skills a lot. This fighting style leads to somewhat boring fights and the UFC is not sold on Koscheck as a potential champ yet. Even with a win on Saturday, Koscheck probably will have to face off against the loser of the Serra/Hughes fight before receiving his title shot.
We'll be rooting for Koscheck at the Dip. Come back Saturday night for fight updates and analysis. Here are some pre-fight predictions for Pizza Parlor Derek.

Can He Get My Nintendo To Work?
Some 17-year-old New Jersey super-nerd cracked the iPhone and made it capable of working with other networks besides AT&T.
George Hotz posted the two-hour long hacking process on his blog. He is auctioning off the first cracked phone on Ebay. He was able to use the phone on T-Mobile, which is the only other US cell phone carrier that is compatible with the iPhone.
The phone also will be able to be used with oversees networks. This is a major deal because the iPhone is only sold in the US. Third-party companies will be able to buy iPhones, crack them, then sell them oversees. If only I could hack software and solder I could be rich.

Viagra's new commercial, "Viva Viagra!" is very confusing to me. Who are they marketing Viagra towards here? Usually you see a guy sitting on his couch just relaxing and watching football then his wife comes through the living room, gives him a wink, he records the game, and they go upstairs.
In that commercial I think the guy actually popped in a VCR tape to record the game. So apparently that ad was geared towards guys in 1999. I'd rather spend the money on a Tivo and keep my fingers crossed about the ED.
Anyway, this Viagra commercial is a bunch of older guys sitting around an empty bar having a "jam" session. No wives, no random women, not even pictures of a lady, just a bunch of very happy, wide-smiling guys really enjoying each others' company.
While sporting medicine-induced erections.
Not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm sure lots of guys pop Viagra then play with their garage band, or play touch football, or scrapbook. And that's fine.
I just wish the brilliant execs at Viagra would have chosen It's Raining Men or YMCA for the commercial. I do think its hilarious how they give each other high fives and an awkward hug before all speeding off in their vehicles.
I'm surprised they didn't show them all driving in the same direction. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

You Better Be Drunk...
Or else you're going to realize you are in West Virginia.
The Princeton Review released its list of the top-10 party schools for 2008. After surveying 120,000 college students, the number one party school was West Virginia University.
Not surprising, though. The students from WVU probably couldn't read the questions and just wrote, "WVU Rocks" as the answer.
The University of Mississippi, the University of Texas at Austin, Florida, and Georgia rounded out the top five.
No word on where SU finished. Behind the strength of Darwin's and Faegan's, it was was somewhere in the 360's.
I'm sure that WVU alumni are very proud. Git R Done Mountaineers!
